Nascent Night Press Acquires Will Boucher’s Roommate: a collection of inopportune rants
Grand Rapids, MI — Nascent Night Press has acquired Roommate: a collection of inopportune rants by Will Boucher, with publication planned for Summer 2026.
A darkly funny, philosophical, satirical work of contemporary fiction, Roommate spotlights the frustrations of shared living with blinding clarity and shapes them into a sharp critique of modern society. Over household chores, a non-participating roommate rants into an introspective narrator’s running inner monologue, influencing moral complacency and reigniting ancient philosophical quandaries. Artificial intelligence, sandwiches, clogged drains, meal prep, dying ficuses—all of these and more come to a head in hilarious and devastating, exciting and innocuous, soft and outrageous juxtaposed perfection. Boucher’s collection finds absurdity, discomfort, and strange clarity in the ordinary virtue of trying to exist.
Roommate: a collection of inopportune rants will be published by Nascent Night Press in Summer 2026.

Nascent Night Press Submissions
Nascent. The definition we’re most familiar with is:
adjective
- beginning to exist or develop.
What if instead, we consider the definition of nascent as if we were chemists:
noun
Chemistry.
- the condition of an element at the instant it is set free from a combination in which it has previously existed.
We want fiction free from the combinations where it currently exists. It is our opinion that many MFA programs, writers’ groups, and workshops are working tirelessly at the present, in order to strip fiction to the barest of bones. Unlike these programs, Nascent Night does not prioritize pure, unadulterated clarity. We do not screech about succinctness. Our goal in publishing is not to release books that everyone wants. That any life experience can read and discard when they are done, feeling satisfied momentarily, but not altered. Unchanged. No, our priority is honesty, beauty, and the undying drive of the motivated writer. We can imagine nothing worse than another Melville, Nabokov, or Faulker—neutered by this push to dull everything so it appeals to mass audiences. The next time your writing group leader says, “you need to use the least amount of words possible to tell the story,” call them a liar. Write with your heart and send us your words.
